Excerpt from book: BOOK III I LOSE MY MOTHER CHAPTER I ' IT was Purim, the feast of Esther. Our school-boys were celebrating the downfall of Haman, and they were doing it in the same war-like fashion in which American boys celebrate their forefathers' defiance of George III. The synagogues roared with the booming of fire-crackers, the report of toy pistols, the whir-whir of Purim rattles. It was four weeks to the great eight-day festival of Passover and my mother went to work in a bakery of unleavened bread. She toiled from eighteen to twenty hours a day, so that she often dozed off over her rolling-pin from sheer exhaustion. But then she earned far more than usual. Including tips from customers (the baker merely acted as a contractor for the families whose flour he transformed into flat, round, tasteless Passover cakes, or "matzoths") she saved up, during the period, a little over twenty rubles. With a part of this sum she ordered a new coat for me and bought me a new cap. I remember that coat very well. It was of a dark-brown cotton stuff, neat at the waist and with absurdly long skirts, of course. The Jewish Passover often concurs with the Christian Easter. This was the case in the year in question. One afternoon?it was the seventh day of our festival?I chanced to be crossing the Horse-market. As it was not market day, it was deserted save for groups of young Gentiles, civilians and soldiers, who were rolling brightly colored Easter eggs over the ground. My new long-skirted coat and side-locks provoked their mirth until one of them hit me a savage blow in the face, splitting my lower lip. Another rowdy snatched off my new cap?just because our people considered it a sin to go bareheaded. And, as I made my way, bleeding, with one hand to my lip and the other over my bare head, the company...

If I wear a long denim skirt in the summer will I look odd and perhaps Jewish? Are they out of style?
Q: My friends and family teased me about wanting to wear it outside...will it make me look like a religious person, a jew, or just someone who doesn't know much about style and trends? When is a long denim skirt appropriate? Just to wear outside, to a store or something. No, I just wanted to wear one to be cooler and thought it was cute and curve-hugging. I am pear-shaped and I wouldn't be comfortable or look good in a mini skirt. Otherwise, I would wear them, because I think they're cute too. Also, I think knee-length denim skirts or skooters just make people look wider. Also, I'm sorry of offending anyone but I just meant looking too modest.A: You could fix the problem of looking "like a religious person" by shortening the skirt to the knee. I have a long denim skirt that I bought years ago and it still fits great but the length is no longer in style so I'm going to have it hemmed to the knee. I know I will get much more use out of it and a knee length skirt (in a classic cut) is always in fashion!! And I'm sure the same would work for you. Let me know what you decide!!! I understand your pear shape but I think you should try and fold the skirt up to knee length just to see if it makes you look wider. And besides you can always combat that with pairing the skirt with something that will balance out the proportions Just give it a try...if you don't you'll never know if it looks good on you!!! Trust me!!!
Why do girls have to wear mini skirts in catholic schools?
Q: Im just curious- I go to a Jewish school and we have to wear long skirts below our knees. Why in other private schools such as Catholic schools are the uniforms like mini skirts. isnt it more attractive? lol thanks =]A: sadly you are seeing only tv shows or music video's as the skirts are to come to the tip of your finger. while they are not as long as jewish, amish, quaker or other ultra conservative - they are not mini.
Why do othrodox Jewish women often wear long black skirts and stockings?
Q: And mostly black shoes and sweaters? Why the black? Sorry, it's Orthodox. See what happens when you don't check your work?A: The poster above me gave a pretty good answer, but I will elaborate a bit. Being modest or dressing in a tzniut manner is an important aspect of Orthodox Judaism. The concept of modesty not only applies to one's dress but how genders interact with each other and how one behaves in life. There are some specific laws in regards to these things, but I will cover apparel. Women and men in Orthodox Judaism are required to cover their bodies in certain ways. For women, that means wearing shirts that have sleeves which reach the elbows and a collar that covers the collar bone. With skirts it means ones that cover the knees and stalkings that cover skin. As far as black, women in different communities have different interpretations of how these laws translate. Some communities find bright patterns which would attract people into glaring against the concept of being modest (these vary on whether women are modern orthodox or not). Other women tend to like black because it's a slimming color. If you live in certain areas, it's practically the unanimous female dress code. We are sort of known for wearing lots of black here in New York for example lol. When women are married, they are supposed to cover their hair in some shape or form. Women wear tischels (scarves), shietels (wigs), snoods, or hats to show that they are married. This video does a pretty awesome job of explaining the concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6bUAtrnHfU With men, they have to wear shirts with sleeves on them and long pants (although this varies in the modern orthodox communities, same for women). Shorts are kind of a modern Orthodox thing, you won't see it in Haredi communities. Men married or not, usually cover their heads with a kippah or yamulke, while some wear black hats. This is to show respect and reverence to God above. It also helps to show that someone is proud to be Jewish. PS: Don't worry about the typos -> It happens.
Why do religious women often wear long denim skirts?
Q: Is it a kind of a uniform? I noticed that Orthodox Jewish women wear them, so do Catholic nuns, some covered Muslim women do too and Baptist/Evangelical and Mormon types wear those long denim skirts too. Why do conservative women of various faiths frequently choose to wear the same clothing item-- a long denim skirt?A: Because long skirts made out of material other than denim are very hard to find, and when you do find them they're often bloody expensive. Besides, denim wears the best and washes like a dream. it's like everyone else wearing blue jeans every single day. Only instead of blue jean pants, it's a blue jean skirt. It isn't a uniform. It's just the most practical thing. Oh and it's also about modesty. Wowee, I just love how understanding and non-judgmental all you people are! Sweet. I have to say, as a Christian woman who only wears skirts...not a one of you has any clue what you're talking about.
How do I get a Jewish woman to notice me?
Q: I just moved to a neighborhood predominately Jewish and observe Jewish religion, girls wearing long skirts and all. So they don't seem to ever look up. What to do, I find the 20 somthings attractive.A: These are Orthodox girls, and they don't date non-Jews. All the best.
