Why did women in the 1950's and before wear girdles, corsets, and garter belts?

Q: Why do you think they put up with it? People say it was because of modesty but today you can wear long beautiful skirts and a modest blouse without putting on corsets and girdles. I am so glad I didn't live back then because I couldn't handled the corset, girdles, or the the garter belts.

A: I think they wore them to help hold things in .. like a girdle to help hold in their stomach so it would not look big - or the garter belts to hold up their stockings. Look at the old west movies and the ladies on their who wore long dresses during the hot days. I 've often wondered how they survived the heat.

What type of hair do would go well with a corset and a long skirt?

Q: see, i'm having my quinces, which sort of like a sweet 16 but at 15. and the girls that are dancing them are wearing a lilac corset dress which is very pretty and the skirt is long we have the jewelry already which is beautiful but i need to pick out a hair do that will go well i don't want anything too fancy any ideas or pictures are appreciated THANK YOU (:

how can I stop a skirt liner from riding up and getting twisted every time I walk?

Q: I bought these two beautiful long skirts; but when I wear them the liners ride up and get horribly twisted and since the outside layer of the skirt is sheer, it's a bit embarrassing; any suggestions? please, they are just hanging in my closet.

A: Sew a few lead weights into the hem. Really. Go to the sporting goods department at Walmart or anywhere that sells fishing tackle, and get a packet of lead weights (sinkers).... They are just split in the middle. For those, you would use a pair of pliers to crimp the sinker onto your thread. Or, if the liner is even with the hem of the skirt, simply baste the liner to the hem of the skirt . . If you're not handy with a needle and thread, buy some Liquid Stitch and glue the liner hem to the skirt hem (or seam to seam) in 4 or 5 places around the skirt.
